Regular cleanings and exams are simple and cost-effective.

Early Detection for Better Treatment Outcomes

Plaque harbors bacteria, which can cause decay and periodontal disease. Proper brushing and flossing at home can certainly help keep bacteria at bay, but it is not enough. Even the most diligent patients can develop these issues over time. A professional dental cleaning is the only method for completely removing harmful plaque deposits. The American Dental Association recommends that all patients receive regular dental cleanings and exams, set at prescribed intervals by your doctor. Most patients benefit from cleanings every six months. However, more frequent appointments may be required for patients who are prone to cavities or gum disease.

Routine dental exams and cleanings are essential for optimal oral health. By addressing problems before they become too severe, you can minimize your risk of needing more invasive treatments in the future.

Routine dental exams also aid in early detection, and a timely diagnosis will give you the best chance for successful treatment. Additionally, during each routine exam, Dr. Archacki will perform an oral cancer screening to check for abnormalities. Because oral cancer treatment is much more effective when symptoms are identified early, a routine dental exam could quite literally save your life.

What to Expect During Your Dental Exam

Dental exams entail much more than simply diagnosing cavities. In addition to a full assessment of your teeth and gums, Dr. Archacki will evaluate your bite, jaw joints, facial muscles, and more. Your dental exam may include:

  • X-rays: X-rays can aid in an accurate diagnosis of several conditions. In addition to detecting cavities, x-rays can also help Dr. Archacki evaluate the underlying jawbone. Our radiographs are completely digital, and emit 90 percent less radiation than conventional x-ray systems.
  • Oral Hygiene Instructions: Our team will also discuss oral hygiene, and help you develop an effective brushing and flossing routine at home.
  • Periodontal Charting: To measure the pocket depths around each tooth, Dr. Archacki will use a special instrument called a periodontal probe. This will help monitor your gum health and can also determine if any bone loss has occurred.
  • Cleaning: Using a combination of ultrasonic scalers and hand instruments, plaque and tartar will be removed from the surfaces of your teeth. A specialized paste will then be used to polish your teeth for a bright and brilliant smile.

Following your examination, Dr. Archacki will discuss your current state of health with you. If any further restorative treatments are needed, such as fillings, crowns, or periodontal therapy, we can schedule an appointment for you at your convenience. If any periodontal issues are found, the doctor can discuss your options and design a treatment plan that will work best for you.
