Address Gum Recession with a Soft Tissue Graft
Gum recession is a surprisingly common dental problem. Although it can be caused by habits like rough brushing, it is most often tied to gum disease. Around 50 percent of the U.S. population has some form of periodontal disease, and individuals over 65 are particularly at risk. Dr. Paul Archacki performs gum grafting as an effective restorative treatment for gum recession at his Boynton Beach, FL, office. The procedure can improve the appearance of your smile, minimize discomfort, and even prevent tooth loss.
Benefits of Gum Grafting
Patients who undergo this periodontal treatment can expect to experience:
- An improved and balanced gumline
- Alleviation from discomfort
- Protection against decay
- A healthier-looking smile
- Boosted confidence
- Reduced sensitivity to hot and cold food and drinks
- Overall better oral health
Am I a Candidate for Gum Grafting?
Candidates for gum grafting must be in good oral health and free from medications that may complicate their recovery. Any underlying causes of gum recession, such as gum disease or tooth decay, will need to be addressed before gum grafting can be considered. Candidates must also cease habits that cause gum recession. Healthy habits that aid in preventing gum recession include:
- Attending routine cleanings
- Practicing good oral healthcare habits
- Eating a healthy diet
- Removing piercings or other objects that may cause gum damage
- Using a soft-bristle toothbrush
- Brushing lightly
- Refraining from tobacco use
Along with healthy dental habits, it is important to understand the root cause of your gum recession. Dr. Archacki will provide advice and tips for preventing related concerns after your gum graft.
A Look at Gum Grafting
Before your surgery, Dr. Archacki will administer a local anesthetic to numb the site. If you experience anxiety over dental treatments, our office offers dental sedation.
Dr. Archacki, a board-certified prosthodontist with decades of experience, can safely perform gum grafting to restore your health.
Once you are comfortable, Dr. Archacki will carefully remove tissue from the donor site and suture the tissue where it is needed to achieve a more even gum line. Most gum grafts are completed within one to two hours.
Based on your needs, Dr. Archacki may perform one of three common gum grafting procedures.
- Connective-tissue graft: This procedure harvests subepithelial donor tissue from the roof of the mouth.
- Free gingival graft: This procedure is similar to connective-tissue grafts but uses surface tissue.
- Pedicle graft: This grafting procedure uses nearby gum tissue.
Some swelling and discomfort are to be expected after this procedure, but should dissipate in the days following your gum grafting. Common tips for recovery include elevating your head while resting, avoiding spicy and hard foods, and avoiding the surgical site while brushing until it has healed.
